It Has Been Snowing Here

It has been snowing here in western Washington.

The transformation of shapes is underway.

Fall's rabbit...

So grateful that my workplace closed for the day

Though this first day of 2012 will flow into the next, as did yesterday, it is a starting point as well. Carries possibility. I've been giving that thought. Possibility. Trying to "feel the shape of things to come" as David Whyte says below. An annual review of what I do and what more I might, to make it better; this magical spinning orb that carries us into the new year.

Stooped low on the beach gathering firewood,

round, bleached and shaped by a gracious weather,

I find the eyes of mythical totems,

the shapes of fish and orca's fins.

My friend tends the fish, I tend the fire.

Slowly the fish fries in it's round black pan.

Beneath, the innumerable shapes of other fish

salted by many years, burn blue and red

and yellow.

Our two kayaks are turned on a gravel beach,

steel grey light on their upturned bows,

while woodsmoke drifts out beyond them,

smudging the islands guarding the cove.

Through those small islands we coasted

skirting the wild weather chasing our sterns,

and I remember, that as we struck gravel

I felt the shape of things to come.

It was as if I remembered how all things fit

one to another and the sound of gravel

was the sound of home, and at the place where

water meets land I could meet all things.

On the cold beach we made a nest, a tent

shadowed by trees, a small fire, a place to sit.

The pure silence of honest work,

twigs cracking in the moist air.

Above us the young eagle circled

seeking a glimmer in the sea.

The waves murmured on the beach,

the gravel's voice rising and falling.

When we find a home like this

it must be that the old ones come by,

Hope you and those you love have had a warm, safe and happy day. We shifted gears and spent the late morning hours at the local theatre enjoying "Sherlock Holmes". Then it was back home for a special meal of tamales, tortilla soup and fruit salsa & feta cheese over black beans. My better half makes a really tasty tortilla soup. It was a great day.

Before the day ends, I wanted to wish you a Merry Christmas from our house to yours. And send you special thanks for taking time to stop by Sea Mist and Sunsets this year.

PS...We may not be the most sophisticated movie critics but are ready to see Sherlock Holmes again soon. Very fun movie.

Once Night Falls

Having spent more Christmas seasons in the Northwest than in CA, where I grew up, I find the Northern version more to my liking, though New Mexico is my favorite. Because it is typically cold and damp here in Dec the scents and sights are different. Fresh, clean smells and sparkling reflective colors abound.

Living near the town of Gig Harbor provides a another fun element to the holidays with their long held tradition of a lighted boat parade. Like other communities around the world, the season is kicked off with a tree lighting. That tree is what you are seeing behind the fisherman statue in the park; and reflected in the still bay water.

The boat parade happens a week later. If I am going to be perfectly honest, I haven't attended one in a couple of decades, as crowds and limited parking are just enough to keep me at arms length. However, part of this traditions magic is watching the harbor boats slowly come to life over the week or so prior to the parade. Then there is a flurry of decorating the day of the event. Once night falls, all the boats slowly circle the harbor a few times. Children's eyes grow big as they pass and boat captains are rewarded with much applause and gratitude for their efforts.

We have lived in this area for so long now, I recognize that some boat lights have gone out through the years which comes with sadness, along with the pleasure of knowing their parade lives on. A community built on the backs of it's early fishermen, Gig Harbor, like other fishing villages, reflects that hard work and the timeless celebration of it.

It was a pleasure to stand beside the magic of those lights for a bit last week. People passing, smiling, sharing a few words with me as we all soaked in the feel of the season. Then it was back to reality, making those earlier moments all the sweeter. Thank you Gig Harbor!

Like millions of us, I am drawn back in time during the holidays. Almost anything can trigger one of those memories, but music certainly stands center. Of course not all the memories are holiday related. The most recent trigger was running across this Christmas red clarinet in one of the local antique stores. Once sighted, the clock began it's backward spin.

When very small, my main musical exposure centered around the radio and a handful of record albums my mom would play. When our first TV arrived we were transfixed and then transported. So many firsts in each viewing. Among my favorites were old movies. It was the early 1950's and everything that came through that big tube was black and white. It all seemed like one big magic trick for the longest time.

My favorite movies were musicals. Those with great dancing got my gold star. Probably not necessary to say Fred Astaire was amazing but, in truth, he was. In some of those movies the big bands were given a good deal of footage which seemed magic as well. Benny Goodman's Orchestra stood out and I loved his clarinet playing and Harry James on the trumpet. It was during that time that I first saw the 1937 movie "Hollywood Hotel". I can't recount the whole movie but the thing I remember clearly was another first. Gene Krupa on the drums. He was something and his playing in "Sing, Sing, Sing" never left me. The piece. The drumming. The man.

It may not be a holiday tune, but the holidays got me there and YouTube had it.

University of WA Botanic Gardens

A week ago, co-workers and I had the opportunity to attend an afternoon Symposium on Ocean Acidification held at the University of WA Botanic Garden facility in Seattle. The speakers and the grounds were excellent.

Fortunately we arrived a few minutes early and were able to walk about. Unfortunately, mid program I had to excuse myself, due to an obnoxious cough. Always better to depart under ones own steam, than to be carried out by an angry crowd. My walk to the car did provide time to catch a few more images.

Twilight on the fading perennials made for some interesting colors and light shifts. If you have to miss out on something you have really been looking forward to hearing, this is a pretty nice alternative. I'll return one day for closer inspection; spring and summer.

In case you have an interest in the ocean acidification topic, the symposium was put on by WA Sea Grant. I am guessing the materials from the presentations will be posted on their site soon. Seasons Go Round

The heavy rain, cold temps and stronger winds have been having their way with our regional fall leaves. Color came on a bit late and then seemed to begin its shift almost as quickly, or so it seemed to me. Mother nature's way of reminding us to pay attention, take in the magic moments and be grateful.

I have been making every effort to catch what I can, with camera and senses, when possible. Twice I have been caught up in swirling/dropping/blowing moments of yellows, reds and more; taking my breath, giving me the chills. The same kind of chills I get when listening to this version of Bruce Springsteen's "I'm On Fire" preformed by Jennifer Nettles and Ben Harper at this years Kennedy Center Honors.

The seasons go round.

Firing up, coloring up, clean and still, renewing.

Sleeping In

Fall has many faces. Not all filled with the lush color of leaves gracing branches and ground. Admittedly those are the images that first come to my mind when making its way into my thinking each year. Just the word gets my heart racing, camera twitchy, motor runnin'.

But fall does have many faces here in the Northwest. And it can be clever. Pesky. But not to the extent of the insane fog in the San Joaquin Valley of California. Tule Fog. It is famous for the many dangers that march in step with its progress.

Instead the fog of the Northwest, though thick at times, seems to softly hover; framing, highlighting and dissolving by mid morn most often. Though not always. Some Sunday mornings it lingers long enough for me to finish my early chores and give it a good chase.

Such was the case on a Sunday morn in Manchester where boats were having a quiet foggy float. Seattle, in the distance, remained shrouded. Sleeping in.

I Made a Silent Vow

I wasn't really sure this was what I saw last night, until pulling it off the camera card just now.

Had anyone asked me, when leaving work an hour early, if I intended to stop and take pictures on the way home I would have laughed. Strong cold germs are rolling through our work group and found me in the morning. By late afternoon I surrendered to the cold and fever. Heading home it seemed everyone who wasn't in line at the pharmacy was lined up in the commute. I made a silent vow to keep moving until my head hit the pillow no matter what.

The thing about making vows is, they seem to tempt failure. But this one failed in a good way. About a half mile from the spot pictured, I could barely see golden purple clouds over tree tops and knew the sunset would be something at Henderson Bay. We were all moving soooooo slowly I was certain it would be gone before I could catch a glimpse.

Much to my surprise, after cresting the small bridge to the bay, this view was there for the taking. Cars seemed to evaporate. I was able to pull over and take a few shots. Then I got a bee in my bonnet to take some shots at waters edge. I drove down to the area near those old pilings you see and spent some time with the camera in the cool fall evening air. It was an amazing place to be in that moment. Humbling.

I made a silent vow to rethink my vow failure theory.

Common Ground

Though running at high speed the last couple of months, my trusty little Canon G11 camera is always within reach. It provides great opportunities for shifting into a calmer gear when needed. As the coming weeks lead into winter, things will slow a "bit" work wise, which means more energy for posting some evenings. And I can tell you, there are a LOT of images just waiting for their time on seamistandsunsets.

This has been a wonderful spring/summer/fall for some of the local environmental events I participate in and others I've visited. Good weather days, good public involvement and a good deal of information shared with folks looking to make a healthy difference; one stream, one bird, one garden, one fish at time. Knowing that what we do individually impacts the world, gives us common ground. (No pun intended.) I have much of that captured in pixels and will be sharing it as time permits. They make me feel so very hopeful, these determined, hard working volunteers and committed professionals who move us forward. I'm honored to know many of them and to see the results of their efforts.

So, a toast to those environmental volunteers, professionals and those of you hanging in here with me during my dry spells. I really appreciate your visits!

A Gift

This sunrise, caught from our deck, was a gift. Now, only two weeks later, my morning commute is near dark. How quickly fall light shifts. Soon I will be coming and going in darkness once again. Not a bad trade off for the colors in the shifting tree leaves.

After that, the Rest is Easy

Most of my days are spent with folks of all ages and perspectives. It’s energizing. They help me keep one foot in the present and the other poised for the next challenge. However, I seem to have a third foot, firmly anchored in the past. Like a three legged table, there is usually balance. When the call of the past is strong, balance is harder to achieve.

Today my table tilts. I hear hoof beats, voices, stories, songs. See sweat stained shirts and brows, saddle weary bodies. Feel in my gut the exhaustion and satisfaction of their hard work.

From a distance they were under-estimated, counted on, chastised and romanticized. Up close they were cowboys, ranchers, dirt farmers, ropers and rodeo champions. Before fencing and subdivisions, they annually drove herds to grass, across vast sections of the San Joaquin Valley in CA and up into the Sierras. Kept watch, protected. Defended when necessary.

Most, not all, lived full lives. Married, had children, grandchildren and greater. Passed on lessons of hard work, stepping-up, leadership and self-discipline. Each one was honorable, humble, serious, humorous and kind. Maybe that was luck, but I doubt it. They earned the respect of many without seeking it. Shared bonds of family, community, hardship and success. And, they all understood a good horse could save your life.

These men have been gone for a long while now. Those of us remaining that remember them, do so with respect and love. One of their nephews carries their stories on to others through Cowboy Poetry. They left many for re-telling. We each have some.

Who were these men? They were my uncles, family friends, first love and my father-in-law. Shortly before passing away in his twenties, while juggling college and cattle, that first love said to me, “Chris, I love this work. My favorite time each day is watching the sunrise from horse back. After that, the rest is easy.” Seems a good thing to remember on this Labor Day.

Sharing the images I chase down or create and the occasional stories that accompany them, has been my pleasure for almost three years now. My hope is that you come here and find something pleasing. However, what you will not find here are the images and/or work of others, without approval, if at all possible. (read passed away - with no lingering copyright attachments, ie, in the public domain) You will occasionally find quotes, links to other sites, youtube, ect, with the author / creator / artist credited.

I believe in the laws protecting intellectual property rights and the reasoning behind them. The folks whose interests they protect are typically the least able to afford any other avenues of protection for their work. They are some of the hardest hit by digital age piracy and the economic decline. Right below human services. Along the way I have periodically had folks take my images without permission, and recently with more frequency. There are better paths.

For Grace

I've uploaded these images with thoughts of my Grandma Grace. She was shy, loved and grew beautiful flowers, made delicious cobblers and filled many of my childhood days with song. Her favorites were the old hymns and she was most happy when she was singing them while doing dishes. Her soft voice would carry out the little window over the sink to the garden, where rows of her colorful treasures grew.

When younger, she accompanied her singing with strings and there is a wonderful old picture of her playing her instrument in the garden, back in Missouri, as a teen. The instrument didn't complete the journey through the states Grandma lived in, while making her way to CA with my Grandpa and their children. Thankfully words are light to carry so the songs continued to spill out long after the strings quieted.

Grandma and Grandpa lived a simple, self reliant lifestyle. They dealt with the things that really matter; getting by as best they could while raising six wonderful children. They suffered losses and challenges, worked hard and rested little. Nothing was fancy but everything was dear. A family gathering with the children and grandchildren was the best of times. A shady spot, iced tea and shared laughter was the recipe for perfection; followed by dish washing and grandma's songs. Her favorite was He Walks With Me. How could it not be, taking place in the garden with dew on the roses. I make a trip to the Point Defiance Rose Garden, in near by Tacoma, each summer and think of her and that last song we played in her honor.

I don't remember ever discussing the particulars of religion with Grandma. She may have attended a church before I was blessed to know her, but by that point, she carried her church with her in those songs.

Had she asked, she would have found we saw things of a religious nature differently. It wouldn't have mattered. She was about heart and home and family. If you fell into one or more of those areas, you were bound to her by threads of love for life. If she was here, I would share this song by Iris DeMent with her. Comes close to my thinking and I have no doubt Grandma would have loved it.

I Took a Stroll

Another of last weekends photos was ready and waiting for today's post. Same variety, same viewing position but definitely not the same color. :) What's not to love about a Gerbera Daisy? Is it becoming evident that I took a stroll through my favorite nursery recently? Sunnycrest Nursery in Gig Harbor is always a treat haven. Do visit if you have the time. Some of my favorite people can be found their daily. This flower was hard to miss.

Made for Walking

The grounds of the Bloedel Reserve on Bainbridge Island in WA provide a calmness I adore. Originally the second home and grounds of folks from Seattle, the properties are now open to the public. For a number of years walking the reserve required a reservation, which meant more certainty of schedule than I typically have when over that way. More recently the reservation requirement has been dropped. There is a charge to explore the grounds, with the resulting funds used for property maintenance.

Mr. Bloedel had a vision and passion for landscaping and a variety of garden styles. Over time many were established with wonderful transitions along the way. The use of flowering plants is limited and in many areas, the natural wet forested inclinations are reflected in seemingly unplanned stretches of mosses and decaying fallen trees. Don't let me mislead you; organization and control are present, but there is respect for the land and areas left open to natures construct as well.

I am no expert, by any stretch of the imagination, on landscape architecture or formal gardening. What I do know is that the Bloedel's created, and left us, comfortably landscaped grounds made for walking in beauty. Having only been there twice over the years, with limited time, there is more to be discovered. What I learned this spring past is where some of the most exciting shades of green are hiding. A fine place for getting in a good long walk in the fresh air.

A week ago today, while dashing for a runaway grocery cart, my husband tripped. Unfortunately his forehead made very hard contact with the cart handle, rearranging things a bit, before he hit the pavement. Others nearby gathered calling 911, providing support, a wet towel for pressure, ice pack and monitoring his situation until members of the Gig Harbor Fire Department arrived.

When I got there he was ready for transport to the hospital where a great doctor and team masterfully stitched my guy back together again. He is now doing well; sporting a look that goes perfectly with his well honed pirate AARRRGGG. Wallace Beery aka Long John Silver of “Treasure Island” fame, would be proud.

We are so very grateful for all who, without knowing Rick, didn’t hesitate to provide quick thinking and kind support to someone in need. May that kindness be returned to you tenfold.

Tending the Shadow Rows

This, the last of a few vacation days, found me at the pivotal point where I'd almost forgotten what day it is and whats waiting at work. Near disconnection. Ah, but something wacky in computerdom placed tomorrows date in the corner of my screen. Not noticed until this afternoon, I had a few circle pacing moments of panic. It made farm equipment tending the shadow rows of the bedspread seem a "bit" less bizarre. Not sure if I should have taken more or LESS time off? Probably more...

In one instant it seems, time moved from "Breathe, it's March" to "Whoa it's April". Between the work schedule slipping into high speed, some side projects, learning my way around updated gear and a tussle with the flu...well, March just flew by. Sorry I didn't get a chance to say, I'll be more sporadic this spring, before becoming just that. We are redefining Spring with our volume of rain fall. Things will grow with the shades of green that bring smile lines thanks to this rain.
So, on this most moist April 1st, mid the biz, I took a sec after taking a sip, shot a pic which tempted a quip about the Scotsman Bell whose phones now click pics from wireless slips in a sec of the year two thousand and eleven. A fine time to be alive.

It has been a cold and rainy time of late.

Glad the camera took it all in stride.

The first photo was taken over looking a field down the street where fog often sleeps the day away. As you can see, yesterday frost paid a visit as well. The second photo, taken earlier in the week while stopped in commuter traffic, caught the falling rain on the side window. Since I was actually trying for the leafless branches against the patch of blue sky, those circles of rain were a surprise. Sometimes the best plans are those that fail.

While Driving

While driving through the Palouse countryside in April of 2010, this chorus line of silos took me on an unexpected, secondary journey. As soon as I spotted them I was jealous. After spending thirty-five plus years in a home under 1000 sq feet, all I could think was, man, look at all that great storage space! Sick, but true. Having no fields, thus no grain to worry about; some mental renovating began as I drove along.

With my own silo I could line the walls with shelving and mount a library like ladder on a rail. It would circle round the room allowing me to grab what I needed from my well marked, well STORED, boxes. Of course my silo would be equipped with great lighting, insulated walls, no moisture and a small utility elevator for raising and lowering the boxes.

Being utilitarian by nature, my silo would have wonderful curved metal doors. They would slide wide open, allowing my little bobcat tractor to back in and haul out larger items when needed. The bobcat would live on the ground floor of my well aged red barn. You know, the one with the giant loft space, all set-up with work tables so my friends could come over and work on projects of small or huge proportions. Heck, we would have enough room to make hot air balloons or boat sails if we chose. And then...

Well, I suspect you have the idea. My drive, which was already filled with endless gasps in reaction to the amazing Palouse landscape, also provided a chance for imagining. No grand inventions or life saving ideas were developed. A few of my heros and sheros; Leonardo Da Vinci, Johannes Gutenberg, George Washington Carver, Benjamin Franklin, Thomas Edison, Madame Curie, Jonas Salk, Temple Grandin, Michael Braungart & William McDonough, Racheal Carson and the like, got there first. (As if)

But that drive was a wonderful opportunity for a bit of creative relaxation. By the time I returned home, our cozy place seemed just fine in it's proportions. Oh, and that storage fantasy? It came true, in the form of a small metal space a few miles away, made just for that purpose. So far, it is organized and requires no elevator. Still dreaming of that communal workspace, but that is small potatoes compared to a less cramped living space. It has entered my mind that development of an electric version of a small tractor might be timely. Hmmm.

Seems it took getting out to see in. My, my, my, silos.

Uniformity. Something, by nature, I tend to resist. Every once in awhile it catches me by surprise, in the best of ways. Spring Blue

Western WA can get pretty gray at times. For reasons I don't care to examine too carefully, it doesn't bother me. Maybe growing up where the summers often sailed over 100 degrees and the sun was relentless, I adapted a reverse reaction to dark days. Whatever the cause, grateful I am, for it has allowed me to happily live in a few places that are a real problem for some.

But, and there is a but, there are gray days, and there are GRAY days. Not unexpected in the land of rain of course. Yet on some occasions, when the rain is coming down in sheets, the sky can look like something out of a horror movie. Dramatic and interesting? Definitely. Humbling? You bet. Today had bits like that.

In those deeply dark moments, it is possible to forget how breathtakingly beautiful this region is. What it looks like bathed in sun, water at full blue with Mt Rainier showing her stuff. In light (pun intended) of that, I am returning to a day that did take my breath away. One that hit me hard, like my ride through the Palouse last spring. A "great to be alive" day. An "I can't believe I live here" day.

With a Slight Turn to the Right

With a slight turn to the right of the previous photos focus, there floated my idea of boating beauty. The ducks at her water line seemed to agree.

I know little of vessel types; aside from being able to identify whether they are made for sailing or not, commercial fishing or not, tugs, aircraft carriers, cruise ships, ice breakers and on. However, as I have mentioned before and likely will again, my heart truly tugs when wooden vessels with the character of time and tending are near. Seeing this one at sail would delight me. Seeing her at rest, does no less. And always the same questions arise; has she traveled far, seen much? Are there stories embedded in her grain, revealed only to those with the talent and time to patiently sand her down?

It turns out her owner was sitting inside, looking out that first larger window, unbeknownst to me at the time. Probably trying to enjoy his early morning coffee. I hope all my camera attention didn't trouble him.

This boat needs no recipe. I suspect she looks fine in any light, on any day. At least to me.

Ethereal costuming, tranquil dancing and lots of color. Just thinking about them ALMOST makes me want to go for a swim.

I love the thoughtful Albertson's Grocery in Port Orchard. During the season of color, they take the cake with changing trees all through the parking lot and around the building. Planting evergreens would be simple and less costly. Thankfully they choose to light up dark days with splashes of color everywhere. If I knew who to hug for it, I think I would. Plus they have a great produce section. Thanks Albertson's.

Country Roads Take Me Home...

During those all to rare occasions that I am able to return to my home place, invariably John Denver rings in my head the minute crop rows and country roads come into focus. Flying above the clouds is really something, but flying low over the familiar has its own unique charm. Calendars begin their backward turn, while the voices and characters that shaped my past come to life once more. As the plane touches down they become most vivid in memory, and my age a yo-yo of six to sixty. Being able to look into the eyes of my dear Aunts and Cousins and see glimpses of my mother, father, grandparents and beyond, firms the ground beneath my feet. Genetic patterning is a comfort; like aerial crop rows, the familiarity is palpable.

On Christmas Day this year I hope to have worked through the details necessary to talk with and SEE the family through Skype. No low flying involved. The opportunities for communication today were unimaginable to that child of six. We'll see if the decades older version can get the wiring and software hooked up. Should you hear me humming "Country Roads Take Me Home" this week, you'll know I found the on-ramp to the Skype highway.

There are times when it is impossible not to be "in the moment". This was one of those times. On my list of most calming spots, this one ranks right near the top and close to number one for the most frequently viewed, as I pass it daily while commuting. As some of you know, it tends to grab my camera on a regular basis. It also serves to heighten senses while calming nerves. Of course there are those times, with heavy wind, waves and rain, that driving the stretch of highway across it provides more sense heightening than calming.

Today is undoubtedly one of those. We are gathering some inches of rain and area ditches, streams and rivers are over topping. The power is still on so... I'm choosing to remember this early November sunset on Henderson Bay and not think over much about the branches and beyond-heavy rain I hear pounding the roof.

Also keeping my co-workers in my thoughts as they muster forces to address flooding needs. The folks who put themselves at risk to keep us all safe have my admiration, including the death defying acts I see power line workers perform during wind storms here in the Northwest. Unbelievable what they accomplish. Thanks to each of you emergency responders for your efforts, expertise and willingness to take action.

Puyallup Valley

I went in search of a pumpkin patch as October began to fade,

The late afternoon light found me on the seasons

Where all manner of local goodness tempted those of us passing by.

Fall may be a theme for awhile as so many photos were taken then, with little opportunity to get them posted here. Though they may be out of sync with the our winter days, hopefully their colors will be welcome reminders of Autumn's kind gifts.

First Wedding

This little one landed in front of my camera, in silhouette, at a recent wedding reception. She was precious in her little raw silk dress with eyes wide open, in awe of the festivities. Nothing quite like attending your first wedding!

Our power is back on and the low, low temps fled today. We forget how much we enjoy Pumpkin Pie until Thanksgiving rolls around each year. That is probably a good thing as it could be habit forming. I gave thanks for your visits and hope your holiday, if you celebrated one, was lovely.

Give Bees a Chance

These are little homes of honey bee hope. At least that is how I think of hives in this time of honey bee fragility. As the seasons first snow begins to fall outside my window I'm thinking of the beekeepers I know in different areas of Western WA and hoping the predicted temperatures, in the mid to low teens for some of the nights this week, do no harm. Each has struggled with the challenges bee health has seen in the last few years.

These hives in the countryside near Chehalis, WA provide honey, wax and pollination to the nearby gardens; fashioned in plantings commonly found in the 1800's. What magical little soft bodied, winged workers bees are. The Egyptians held bees in godly stead. Considering how critical bees are to tree, ground and bush crops, they may not have been too far off the mark. On this snowy evening, I'm just thinking...give bees a chance!

I was visiting one of my old friends, the Paper Birch tree at Wright Park, on my lunch break recently. She is big and tall with some calloused damage in her largest branches, proving her determination to live.

By the time I can get to the park from where I now work, there is little time to spend there, but the journey is worth it. The dance of the Paper Birch is not to be missed. Of course the fall leaves are a draw, but on this visit I spent most of my time paying respect to one of the park's finest.

This is the point where Donkey Creek enters Gig Harbor Bay. The harbor is a lovely place, sunrise to sunset, but I often wonder, would it be as enchanting without the grace of Mt Rainier in the distance? She seems to me, the candlelight that changes a beautiful supper into a night to remember.

I have been having a great time with Halloween this season. It is a wonderful opportunity for pushing all the imagination buttons, though I don't think I've really pushed mine for thirty or so years. Out in the country we don't see trick or treaters.

However, this year the contageous Halloween spirit filtered through the fun folks at my workplace and into the cubicles. Before I knew it, my habit of paper cutting odd birds took a turn, thanks to a suggestion from my husband. By the end of the week my cubicle was a goofy combination of ravens (sort of), Poe's words, eyes, witches, black roses and other nutty things. I had fun and other folks in the building did as well. I missed seeing all the cubicle transitions. A friend in the space across from me put together a great mad scientist's lab. It's amazing what can be accomplished in a short bit of time before and after work.

On Friday some folks arrived in really creative costumes. No decision has been made about whether to remove the faux feathered raven from the top of my black straw hat. After all, it might need to be ready for next year. It was worn alone, but was originally going to accompany the mask above. One five minute test drive at home let me know, NOT. Very uncomfortable. Instead a head shape was covered with draped black fabric, eyes painted and placed in the sockets, masked, and the whole thing rode atop my upper shelf. It gave me a scare more than once, when rising and coming face to face with it. Everything else in there was pretty tame.

I took a few photos (big surprise) around the office and caught one of the masked raven. I just couldn't resist scaring myself one more time, so today I married it to another photo taken earlier this month, of a vintage umbrella. Let's hope the mania ends here or... Nevermore.

Landing, Landing, Landing

As some of you already know, one of my favorite places to observe birds is the Nisqually National Wildlife Refuge. This shot was taken last fall as geese touched down around me in what seemed a snowstorm of feathers and honks. It was a wonderful half hour or so that I can still hear when senses are willing.

When reviewing photos of that day, I am reminded of another landing twenty or so years ago. While returning to Seattle from California, on a large jet for which I have no number or name, my seat mate and I nervously stretched the limits of our collective dark humor. It was winter and our pilot was attempting to land in a harsh storm, which carried heavy wind gusts and enough lightening bolts to rival a Fourth of July celebration designed by Zeus. As we laughed and kidded about our impending demise the plane rocked and rolled through the sky, as if in sync with a hard rocking tune from the sixties. The lightening flashing about our wings fit right in with the theme. We circled the airport for a LONG time, not able to land because of the line up of rockers ahead of us.

When we finally began our decent, the plane (read pilot) defied odds by keeping the tilting to more of a crowd wave; wing to wing. Back and forth we drifted, tipping wings and bumping up and down. Every few seconds the lightening would flash allowing us to see our speeding "progress". One final lightening flash outside our window and we were bouncing and bucking our way down the runway. Just as we were completing our final few bounces, the female Attendant announced; "Ladies and Gentlemen, we are landing...landing...landing...in Seattle and we want to thank you for joining us on this exciting ride." Following a rousing round of applause from the passengers we departed, many stopping to vigorously shake the hand of the pilot.

Humor. It really can make all the difference. Beyond being grateful for our safe arrival that night, to this day, I remain equally grateful that serendipity placed the right fellow beside me for the ride. Someone else who saw the humor in their fear. As we headed our separate ways following our departure, we were both still laughing. Each time I look at this photo, along with the wings and honks, I hear "we are landing, landing, landing..."

Seasonal shifts. Always interesting...where and how the shifting signs appear. On a misty spring morning in Sandpoint, Idaho (above) the change seemed represented by firsts and lasts. The first boat to dock at the marina and the last goose out.

Seasonal shifts. Fine prompters of appreciation, causing us to stop and take notice. Reminding us to breath deeply of the now crisp air. We were greeted with a temp of 34 degrees this morning. Soon the deep breaths will flow more freely indoors while outdoors takes a rest.
